What does the research say about BPC-157?

BPC-157 appears in many preclinical experiments, while the FDA described the available human information as inadequate to establish effectiveness or safety. Official notice17

What is BPC-157 being studied for?

BPC-157 was nominated for FDA review for use in ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, celiac disease and tendonitis; FDA evaluated only ulcerative colitis. Official notice17

A 2013 experiment studied colitis and colon repair in rats. Its measured outcomes belong to that animal model. AnimalPreliminary1

Are there human studies on BPC-157?

Two Veljaca meeting abstracts describe research in healthy subjects; FDA's safety summary lists 24 who received BPC-157. A separate UC trial randomized 53 people and was reported in one meeting abstract. The original abstracts were not independently retrieved for this page. Official notice17

Three published reports addressed knee pain, bladder symptoms and a two-person short safety assessment, respectively. They did not answer the same clinical question. HumanPreliminary13 HumanPreliminary3 HumanPreliminary14

A 2026 systematic review included those three published reports, 30 people total, under its inclusion rules and rated the certainty of evidence very low. Its count excludes the older conference reports summarized by FDA, so the two counts have different scopes. ReviewPreliminary23 Official notice17

What did the ulcerative-colitis trial show?

The public account is a single 2005 meeting abstract describing a 53-person randomized, placebo-controlled trial; 46 completed it. The FDA called the information inadequate to support a conclusion about effectiveness or safety. Official notice17

No outcome claim from that abstract is treated here as an established result. Official notice17

What do the animal and lab papers add?

One original paper tested rat colitis and colon repair. Another 2026 paper examined a molecular pathway in cell experiments and included animal observations. These are distinct investigations; the latter is assigned once to Lab in our working source register. AnimalPreliminary1 LabPreliminary24

Editorial method note: The research brief has not completed the animal and lab census. The evidence meter reads METER PENDING, with no numeric totals.

What is the FDA status of BPC-157?

FDA held a Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee meeting July 23-24, 2026 Official noticeProposed18. FDA staff's BPC-157 briefing recommended against adding it to the 503A list Official notice17.

TIME reported the committee voted 8-6, with one abstention, to recommend BPC-157; KPV was also recommended. Six of the seven peptides considered were recommended, while emideltide was rejected 6-7 20. The recommendation is nonbinding 20.

The vote itself did not add BPC-157 to the 503A list or approve it as a drug; FDA's listing process requires rulemaking Official noticeProposed19.

In October, an HHS/FDA peptide "interim access policy" was sent to the White House/OMB for review, according to AP via STAT and Reuters 2526. The proposal is not a final rule. The AP report attributes possible inclusion of BPC-157 to unnamed sources; the filing did not specify covered peptides 26.

Key takeaways

  1. A 2013 rat colon experiment is an animal study, not a human result. AnimalPreliminary1
  2. FDA summarized older human conference reports, including a 53-person UC trial whose public information it found inadequate for effectiveness or safety. Official notice17
  3. A 2026 review included three published human reports and rated overall certainty very low. ReviewPreliminary23
  4. TIME reports a recommendation for six of seven peptides, including BPC-157 and KPV; the vote did not enact a 503A listing or approve a drug 20. Official noticeProposed19
  5. The evidence meter has no numeric counts until a complete deduplicated search is verified. Editorial status: METER PENDING.
